The Prorectorate for Research – PROPESQ is a central executive body of Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina whose aim is to assist the Rector with executive tasks in the areas of research, innovation, intellectual property, entrepreneurship and business incubation.

PROPESQ seeks to contribute to the realization and strengthening of UFSC social role in the areas of research and technological innovation, by means of institutional policies, the development and maintenance of project information systems and other related activities culminating in the dissemination of research results carried out in the University.

Research at UFSC

Research at UFSC is developed by faculty members and, in some cases, by the administrative staff in their respective departments. Undergraduate students are strongly encouraged to take part in research activities, and this is done through the provision of scientific scholarships. At the graduate level, students must develop a research paper and are advised by advanced faculty members registered in graduate programs.

The responsibilities of the Prorectorate for Research are:

  • comply with and enforce research legislation at various institutional levels such as the Research Council, Academic Schools, Departments and Supplementary Bodies;
  • promote and support institutional policies related to research activities;
  • coordinate the implementation of actions related to the research policy of the University as defined by the University Council, and ensure compliance with relevant standards;
  • issue reports, ordinances and other administrative acts that may be necessary for completion of the activities in its area of operation;
  • promote and support activities that foster and support research;
  • propose to the competent authority the signing of agreements with other bodies, when related to its area of operation, followed by the monitoring of such agreements;
  • encourage the development of research activities through specific programs or by administrating external programs;
  • stimulate, authorize and supervise scientific and technological research projects, with a view to ensuring their regularity and compatibility with the public interest;
  • stimulate, authorize and supervise the execution of projects of science administration and technology transfer, with a view to ensuring compatibility between the projects and the public interest;
  • coordinate actions to raise funds from institutional research projects, including the CT-INFRA (national fund for science and technology infrastructure), multiuser labs, incubators, tax waiver and budget decentralization;
  • promote, coordinate and enhance programs that foster institutional research at the University;
  • promote and support the development of individual and collective research, at departmental, interdepartmental and interinstitutional levels;
  • monitor negotiations and issue reports related to the licensing or implementation of partnerships, agreements or contracts with third parties, aiming to exploit the technologies generated at UFSC;
  • carry out and enforce the provisions of UFSC resolutions related to intellectual property;
  • issue reports about the signing of contracts and/or research and development agreements, with regard to the intellectual property clauses within UFSC, whenever the institution is directly or indirectly involved;
  • in conjunction with domestic and foreign entities and competent bodies, elaborate intellectual property-related requests and monitor their proceedings, if necessary with professional support;
  • sign contracts and terms of grants for research projects;
  • convene and preside over the meetings of the Research Council;
  • coordinate institutional research projects;
  • plan, coordinate and assess research-related activity plans;
  • propose and manage the exchange with other entities, aiming to promote research development;
  • contribute to the realization and strengthening of the social function of UFSC in the area of research;
  • participate in collegiate bodies, commissions and committees dedicated to the promotion of science and technology;
  • supervise, monitor and evaluate the institutional programs PIBIC, PIBITI (CNPq)/BIP (UFSC), and others related to its area of operation, and also to designate the respective selection committees;
  • supervise and monitor the management of the programs: Junior Scientific Initiation, Academic Merit Scientific Initiation and other related programs in its area of operation);
  • supervise the collection, organization and publication of data from scientific and technical production by faculty and researchers from UFSC;
  • supervise the establishment of the system of registration, information and dissemination of research projects at UFSC;
  • supervise and coordinate the activities of the Internal Committees of Selection and Assessment of research programs;
  • assist faculty and researchers from UFSC in submitting, to IBAMA/CGEN, authorization requests related to their research activities;
  • perform other activities pertaining to the area or that may be delegated by the Rector.
